OPPORTUNITY

Play On! Canada is making an open call for two individuals to sit on the Board of Directors with a three year term commencing October 2021. All meetings take place virtually given national board membership.

About Play On! Canada: 

Play On! is Canada’s largest sports festival with over 2.5 million Canadians in 37 communities participating since 2003. 

Play On! Canada’s mission is to connect and benefit communities by celebrating our national heritage through sport for all Canadians. The organization has historically provided street sports programming for the hockey industry and is examining new opportunities in other sports meaningful to Canadians.  The organization is committed to delivering sustainable mass participation sports programming that lifts and builds the nation.

Play On! Canada is a not for profit organization. The organization is preparing to have its philanthropic arm, the Play On! Canada Foundation, file an application to become a registered charity in 2021.

About Play On! Canada’s Board: 

The leadership of Play On! Canada’s Board of Directors is essential to the effective governance and vitality of the organization. 

The mandate of the Board is summarized as follows:

  1. Oversee Play On! Canada’s faithful and consistent adherence to its mission and values.
  2. Ensure strong fiduciary oversight, risk mitigation, financial management and growth strategies to pursue Play On! Canada’s mission. 
  3. Ensure the strategic planning process is thorough and complete, as well as oversee its execution by Management
  4. Provide for its own succession by identifying new directors who are wholly committed to Play On! Canada’s success.
  5. Oversee the selection of leaders and the performance management of the organization’s national (volunteer) working committees

Individual Board Member Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization
  • Engage in identifying and securing resources and partnerships that may be ideal for Play On! Canada to advance its mission
  • Prioritize Play On! Canada in their own philanthropic activities
  • Prepare for, attend and actively participate in monthly Board Meetings 
  • Participate in one or more Board sub-committees 

While optional, it is appreciated when Board members participate in volunteer, donor and other public events

Qualifications for New Board Members: 

In 2021, the Board is seeking to grow its board with two directors. 

Specifically, in addition to being passionate about Play On! Canada’s mission, we are seeking individuals who have skills and experience in the following areas: 

  • Practicing lawyer in Canada with knowledge of organizational governance / charitable law
  • Government relations at the federal and provincial levels
  • Executive (c-Suite) leadership in corporate Canada

Previous Board experience and multilingualism are assets.
